Katharine MaurerPublic historian Maria Sakovich wrote the article linked below about Katharine Maurer, “Deaconess Katharine Maurer: A First Class Favourite Anytime,” for the Spring 2011 issue of The Argonaut, the publication of San Francisco Museum and Historical Society. We greatly appreciate permission from Maria and to SFMHS for allowing reposting of this article on our website.

Katharine Maurer spent close to thirty years providing assistance to thousands of immigrants who were detained on Angel Island and continued assisting immigrants in San Francisco after the Administration Building fire in 1940 closed the Immigration Station. Maria Sakovich’s article provides a great deal of information about her fascinating life and years of service.
