Please note that if you are in SF and plan to drive to Marin the weekend of the event that Doyle Drive will be closed for the conversion to the new freeway. You can drive to Marin by way of Park Presidio/Hwy 1, but delays are anticipated.

We recommend if you are in SF, the Peninsula or South Bay that you take the ferry from Pier 41 that day. People from the East Bay can take either the SF or Tiburon ferries, or take the ferry from Oakland and transfer at Pier 41 to the Blue and Gold Ferry.

Kay Speaks at Angel Island barracks

Come explore the former U.S. Immigration Station, a National Historic Landmark at Angel Island State Park. Learn from descendants of immigrants about how they researched their stories and enjoy the beautiful island.

Our speakers include:

  • Professor Grace Yoo from San Francisco State University
  • Public historian Maria Sakovich
  • Mel Orpilla of the Filipino American National Historical Society
  • Angel Island volunteer Sam Louie
  • Journalist and activist Nancy Ukai Russell
  • Jeffrey Klein, whose mother’s incomplete story about escaping from Nazi-controlled Austria is on our Immigrant Voices site. What an update he has to share!

On top of all the wonderful speakers we will have displays from volunteers Kay Speaks, Lotus Yee Fong, Janice Sellers, and Ancestry.com experts on their own research who will be available to help people research their own families, and a video from author Minal Hajratwala, author of Leaving India. We will also have an update about the progress of converting the former public health museum into a Pacific Coast Immigration Center.

Admission to the U.S. Immigration Station including the building open house with volunteers explaining the different rooms and the Family History Day is $5 for adults, $3 for ages 6-17, children under 5 years old is free. Help avoid lines at the Immigration Station and print out your admission tickets online at Brown Paper Tickets at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/1761477.
