Saturday, February 19, 2011 Celebrate the Chinese New Year at San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park. 10 a.m to 3:00 p.m. at the foot of Hyde and Jefferson Streets on the Hyde Street Pier. Activities include kid's crafts, story-telling, a Chinese folk music concert, history talks, and a chance to see the park's Chinese sailing junk decorated for the New Year. Free. Euphrat Museum of Art at De Anza College. 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The new artwork celebrates Assemblyman Paul Fong, his wife Grace Mock Fong, their children, his grandfather Chan Share, and his father, the late Y.K. Fong, and his mother Mei Fong. The Fong family was a part of the floral industry in Santa Clara County and a visual reference to that fact is incorporated in the artwork.
Sunday, April 10, 2011 A Celebration of the Interfaith Coalition for Immigrant Rights. 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Mission Delores Parish Hall, 3321 16th Street, San Francisco. Dinner will be served. A donation of $15 is requested. The evening will include storytelling, music, and speeches about the efforts to achieve full dignity and justice for immigrants. Friday, April 15, 2011 AIISF Silicon Valley luncheon at the Dynasty Restaurant in Cupertino. We will spotlight four individuals who are among the few remaining former detainees at the Immigration Station: Dr. John Kao, Frank Lum, Louise Lee Jang, and George Akira Makishima. Otto Lee, former Mayor of San Mateo and current city council member, will also be the guest speaker and address what being an immigrant means to him. Saturday, April 30, 2011 Reenactment Day. Reenactment of historic immigrant interrogations with actors in period costumes, plus a panel discussion relating the Angel Island experience to what immigrants face today. Professors Bill Ong Hing of USF Law School and Judy Yung, professor emerita at UC Santa Cruz, will speak. 11:30 a.m., Immigration Station. For more details, click here.
Saturday, July 23, 2011 Save the date for the celebration of our Centennial Wall. Many families are planning to hold reunions and view the unveiling wall, which honors immigrants to America, including many who came through Angel Island.
