In the US, she planned to join her sister Mrs. Rosaline Riskin, her brother-in-law Mr. Solomon Riskin, and her daughter Bernice Blum, who is also referred to as Bronia Blum in San Francisco. Soloman ran a successful jewelry store, which would have allowed him to support Bertha, had the need arise. Her daughter has been in the US since 1938. In addition to her sister and daugther, Bertha's father Juda Blum lived in the city along with the family of Pauline Pedrin, Bertha's other sister. During the interrogation, she was questioned about her husband, Joseph Blum, who was a Russian refugee from Latvia because he had no official nationality. He was in Shanghai and had been granted a visa some time before but Bertha was unsure if he would come to the US or not. Bertha was admitted to the US following the interrogation. In his summary, the chairman noted that she seemed to be an intelligent person of some education.
